Picking the right colour for your room can be daunting. What if you make a mistake and you don’t like the end result?
Sometimes you have an idea of what you want colour you want to use in your space you just need a little confidence in picking the right tone or need a second opinion.
There are lots of things to consider when selecting the right colour for your home so here are my top tips:
- Consider the mood you wish to create – different colours evoke different emotions. Choose a colour scheme that aligns with the mood you want for each room, eg, calming, relaxed, creative, energised.
- My top tip would be to start with selecting any key fabrics, finishes and flooring before picking the paint colour. There are so many paint choices out there, it is easier to pick a few colours to test with your key items than looking at a paint chart with hundreds of colours and trying to work out where to begin!
- Natural light – pay attention to the natural light in the space. Colours can appear different under various lighting conditions, so test them in the room’s natural light.
- Room size – lighter colours tend to make a room feel more spacious, while darker colours can create cosiness. Consider the size and purpose of each room.
- Colour harmony – create a cohesive look by choosing colours that harmonise with each other. Use a colour wheel or colour palettes for guidance.
- Personal preferences – your personal taste matters. Choose colours that resonate with you and make you feel comfortable in your home.
- Consider functionality – consider the purpose of each room and choose colours that enhance that function.
- Test samples – before committing to a colour, test paint samples on the walls. This allows you to see how the colour looks in the specific lighting of your home. Read my guide on how to test paint samples for more tips.
- Accent colours – introduce accent colours to add interest and personality. This can be through furniture, accessories, or an accent wall.
- Flow between spaces – ensure a smooth transition and harmony between rooms by considering how colours flow from one space to another.
Remember, the key is to create a space that reflects your style, suits your lifestyle, and brings you joy.
